04/21 edge, bayer, electrasol (& revenge)

profit: $14.63

as you may remember, i bought the aveeno positively ageless cleansing pads on 4/19 and they did not qualify for the eb deal. so i brought them with me today for an exchange. left them at the counter and went shopping. when i went back up, i gave the cashier the original receipt for the aveeno and there was a problem. 2 problems actually.

1) the manager assumed i was trying to return something i earned extrabucks on. after examining the receipt, she realized that the items i bought did not qualify.

2) my boyfriend had paid $3.71 on his credit card. i did not have the credit card with me, so they could not process the return. i only wanted store credit, but i was told it was not possible.

so i went ahead and purchased the items i had brought to the register, even though i had been counting on $27 store credit from the aveeno return to apply to this purchase.

i bought:
dove skinvitalizer $4
dove skinvitalizer $4
Edge Infused Comfort or Hydrate Shave Gel $2.89
Bayer Aspirin Quick Release Crystals 4 ct $2

so i left, feeling a bit dazed after spending over $20 cash. (regular readers will know that is a hell of a lot for me!) i stopped to read the return/exchange policy posted in the lobby. it says that without a receipt, you can receive store credit on a cvs moneycard. so i went back in and asked the manager "what if i just lost my receipt?" (wink wink, nudge nudge) "couldn't i return my stuff for store credit?" she said no, and that i would have to return the items at the location i purchased them from. i was really aggravated to have this hassle over $3.70, and after walking to cvs in the rain, so i decided to call corp.

after speaking to corp, i was told that this is the policy, but to hold on and she would see what she could do. after holding for a bit, the rep came back and told me she had spoken to the manager and unfortunately, i still couldn't make my return without the credit card.

as i was walking home and thinking about what poor customer service this was, and really not liking the idea that i had paid $21 cash, i decided to go back and return most of what i bought. after all, why should i give my business to the store where the manager has this type of attitude? i can always rebuy at a friendlier cvs.

i returned:
dove skinvitalizer $4
dove skinvitalizer $4
aveeno positively ageless cleanser $9.99
aveeno positively ageless cleanser $9.99
aveeno positively ageless cleanser $9.99

= -$37.97 + -$3.27 tax (received $19.74 on cvs moneycard, $21.51 cash)

returned:
$10 eb Aveeno Skin Care, Hair Care or Sun Care Products get $10 eb wyb $25 on page 9 (4/19-4/25)

summary:
received $19.74 cvs moneycard + $21.51 cash
returned $10 eb
credit received: $31.25

the cashier did not want the extrabucks back for the aveeno at first, but i told her that i would feel better returning them and that i didn't want anyone to think i was trying to scam the store. i also explained why i was returning this stuff. the assistant manager processed the return for me and was genuinely empathetic and awesome (as she always has been). i will definitely be emailing a compliment her way.

summary of purchase and return:
spent $10 eb + $21.51 cash
received $14.89 eb
received $19.74 cvs moneycard + $21.51 cash
returned $10 eb
profit: $14.63 ♥

notes:
if you apply the $14.63 i made today with the cost of my purchases on 4/19 which was $12.21, i have a profit of $2.42. when i go back with my boyfriend's credit card to exchange the aveeno, and believe me - i will... more profit!

the moral of the story? if the manager at this store had allowed me to exchange the aveeno, i would have spent $3 more (the cleansers are $1 more than the pads) and she would have had another $38 in merchandise sold (the items i bought today and ended up returning.) instead, she was difficult and showed no customer service skills. this lost her sales, got her reported to corp, and i got a better deal than i wanted to begin with.

she probably will not even be told that i came back to return my stuff, and even if she is, she probably doesn't care. but its the principle of the matter, and i am glad i did what i did.
